It is essential to increase employment opportunities under the scheme to stop people from migrating, says officer

For effective implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Vijayapura district, district in-charge secretary Mohammed Mohsin has directed the district administration and the zilla panchayat to hold hobli-level MGNREGA adalats.

Chairing a review meeting on drought in the district on Monday, he said that it was essential to increase employment under the scheme during drought to prevent people from migrating.

He said that while this is the objective of MGNREGA, the hobli-level adalats would help address grievances of the public related to the scheme. Mr. Mohsin told officials concerned to encourage local skilled youths to repair drinking water units instead of getting it repaired in Bengaluru or in other cities.

He said that getting water units repaired locally helped save time, while providing job to local youths.

With regard to ongoing multi village drinking water scheme, Mr. Mohsin directed Deputy Commissioner K.B. Shivakumar to complete the work on priority by holding regular meeting with officials to check status of the scheme.

Mr. Shivakumar told the meeting that 96 villages and 17 wards of Devarahipparagi town are being supplied drinking water through tankers. Any demand for supplying water through tankers would be immediately approved to help the people.

Now, drinking water is being sourced from 42 private borewells, while 208 more private borewells have been identified in the district for any future requirement. Mr. Shivakumar said that a direction has been issued to revenue officials to open one fodder bank in each hobli.

Zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Sundresh Babu spoke on multi-village drinking water scheme and MGNREGA.

Several district-level officials were present.
