The proposed 24x7 drinking water supply scheme for the twin cities is expected to solve the water woes of the citizens in the future. But, as of now, the project-related works have only added to the miseries of the people. Unscientific digging of roads to lay pipelines has turned Dharwad into a “city of dust”.
The residents alleged that the officials were not taking steps to ensure that the atmosphere is free from dust ever since the works began a couple of weeks ago. Digging of roads is done using machines and manual tools. As the area has red soil, dust is generated easily. But the authorities have not made arrangements for sprinkling water to prevent generation of dust. Besides, wherever the pipeline works are over, proper filling up works are not being done.
Karnatak University syndicate member Hashavardhan Sheelavant said the dust was causing problems to children and elderly persons. When asked about the issue, the officials said such troubles were common and people would have to tolerate it if they needed water. “Isn’t it the highhandedness of the officials? Should the people wait for road repair works till the pipeline laying works are over?,” he asked. “We have brought the problem to the notice of the officials. We would file a complaint with the Lokayukta or approach the court if the problem continues,” Mr. Sheelavant said.
