Central University of Karnataka (CUK) plans to publish English translations of classic literary works in Kannada, Vice-chancellor H.M. Maheshwaraiah has said.

He was here to inaugurate a 10-day workshop on classical Kannada, organised by Vijayanagar Sri Krishnadevaraya University (VSKU), Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, and the Centre for Excellence for Classical Kannada, on Monday.

While recalling the efforts of scholars and protagonists of Kannada in getting the language the classical tag, he said that it was the duty of Kannadigas to strive hard to nurture and propagate the language, which was one among the few ancient languages in the world.

“Kannada language, literature and its culture are very rich. As many as eight Kannada litterateurs have bagged the prestigious Jnanapith award. However, without Kannadigas, Kannada language will not survive. To nurture and propagate Kannada and its culture, everyone has to strive hard. The universities should strengthen the Department of Kannada, organise workshops, and take up publication of Kannada literature in English and other languages to show that its rich literature reaches all. The central varsity will extend its support to the cause if the other universities come forward,” he said.

M.S. Subhas, Vice-Chancellor, VSKU, suggested making use of advanced technologies to popularise Kannada. He also said that VSKU was keen to take up research and sought financial assistance for the purpose. “VSKU will be committed to propagating Kannada language and was ready to have a tie-up with CUK for the purpose,” he said.

Shanta Naik, Dean, Arts Faculty VSKU, and N. Murali Mohan of CIIL, were present.
