To tackle the garbage crisis, CREDAI-Karnataka has directed affiliated developers to compulsorily install hi-tech waste processing units in all their projects.

CREDAI-Karnataka president R. Nagaraj said that the decision was spurred by the Union Government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. “With ever-growing number migrants, rising real estate projects and over-burdened city infrastructure, we thought it’s time we stepped in to make every apartment or gated community self-reliant in terms of garbage processing.”

CREDAI-Karnataka has nearly 250 developers in Bengaluru alone, and this decision will be implemented in over 1,000 projects. “We will ensure that this is implemented across the State in a phased manner,” he added.

Mr. Nagaraj said that the model is on the lines of CREDAI-Kerala where hundreds of developers, along with the State government, came together to treat their own garbage and won the Urban Development Ministry-Environment Award-2014.

Explaining the model, he said that biodegradable waste would be converted to compost using aerobic microbial composting method. The dry waste would be recycled. The cost for installing units to treat dry and wet garbage could vary from Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 2 crore depending on the size of the project.
