Members of the district unit of the Government Hostel and Residential Schools Contract Employees Association staged a protest outside the zilla panchayat office here on Tuesday demanding minimum wages and an end to contract system.

Bheemshetty Yempalli, district president of the association, in a memorandum addressed to Aniruddh Shravan, chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, said that the contract workers employed in government hostels and residential schools were not getting the honorarium as per the revised wage of Rs. 5,850 a month. The employees had not been paid the honorarium for the last seven months, he added.

Mr. Yempalli criticised the officials of the Social Welfare Department for inviting fresh tenders for appointing employees on contract basis without revising the honorarium accordingly as per the government order.
