Communal violence in north Karnataka districts

Chikkodi in Belagavi district and Surpur in Yadgir district saw communal violence on Thursday night and Friday, with groups of youths in both places barging into localities dominated by one community, alleging attempts of cow slaughter.

These incidents come two days after Mudhol town in Bagalkot district on Wednesday night saw communal violence during a Ganesh immersion procession, leading to destruction of property, with 21 vehicles, two houses and 40 shops burnt.

In Chikkodi, trouble started after a group of youths from one locality entered another with cameras and smartphones, alleging cow slaughter and sought to know which meat was being used to cook dishes for Bakrid celebrations. A few residents objected to the actions of the youths, resulting in an altercation. In the clash that followed, nine persons of both communities were injured. Two cases have been registered at Chikkodi police station.

On the outskirts of Surpur town, there was a clash between a group of youth and members affiliated to a right-wing outfit, after the latter tried to take photographs of cattle tied outside homes, alleging they were meant for slaughter. One person was injured in the clash that ensued. No arrests have been made so far.

Meanwhile, an uneasy calm prevailed in Mudhol town, with Section 144 of the Cr.PC imposed and most establishments shut on Friday.
