Communal tension in Huliyar

There was tension in Huliyar hobli in Chikkanayakanahalli taluk in Tumkur district on Wednesday night.

Three men from a particular community were removing banners and buntings tied across the road and were causing hindrance to vehicular movement on Achar street around 10.30 p.m.

Residents of a house where the banners were tied objected to those three men removing the banners. The three men stopped removing the banners and went away.

Then, a group of around 150 people from another community gathered in front of the Huliyar police station and demanded that the police take action against the men who tried to remove the banners and buntings. There was a heated exchange of words between the police and the group following which the police arrested the three men.

Meanwhile, another group of three people expressed their anger over the incident by throwing stones at a KSRTC bus parked on the roadside.

The driver of the KSRTC bus, who was sleeping inside the bus, suffered minor injuries in the stone-throwing. The windowpanes of the bus were broken. A case has been registered against the three persons who threw stones at the bus.

Additional Superintendent of Police R. Lakshman told The Hindu that the situation is under control in Huliyar. There were no untoward incidents on Thursday.
