Coconut farmer, wife commit suicide in Tumakuru

A coconut farmer and his wife committed suicide by hanging to a tree in Thalekere of Turuvekere taluk in Tumakuru district on Sunday.

The police have identified the deceased as Srinivas (36) and his wife, Kalavathi (30). Srinivas had 3.5 acres of land and had taken loan of Rs. 60,000 from Kaveri Grameena bank and Rs. 35,000 from VSSN (Vyavasaya Seva Sahakara Bank Niyamitha) co-operative society.

He was distressed over not getting water from the bore-well which he had dug a few months back.

Srinivas had left the house around 8 a.m. saying that he was going to his farm. But when he did not return home for breakfast till 10 a.m., his wife, Kalavathi went looking for her husband and found him dead. Shocked after seeing her dead husband, Kalavathi hung by the other end of the rope.

The couple is survived by their eight-month-old daughter. A case has been registered in Turuvekere police station.
