Mayor Ashwini T. Majjagi has instructed officials of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) to complete the works on clearing drainage and covering manholes within a week.

Chairing a special meeting here on Tuesday, she reviewed the progress report on drainage clearing works from the zonal officials and said she would start inspection from Wednesday.

The Mayor had instructed the zonal officers to list the complaints in the morning and also submit an action taken report to her in the evening every day.

Disciplinary action would be taken against the erring officials if manhole-related accidents happened during the monsoon, she said.

From June 1, the HDMC would organise ward-level Jan Adalats to hear the grievances of the people. Mayor, Deputy Mayor, the Leader of the Opposition in the HDMC council and officials would take part. Zonal officers should ensure that minimum complaints were reported from their respective zones, she added.

Is there a communication gap between the officials in the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation? It appears to be so.

When Mayor Ashwini Majjagi asked about the action taken by officials to remove illegal hoardings, executive engineer Mahesh said they had not received any instructions. Revenue officer A.R. Desai said HDMC commissioner Noor Mansur had issued specific instructions. But Mr. Mahesh reiterated that such instructions had not not issued yet.

He said if the instructions were issued, the work on removing illegal hoardings would have started by now.

Ms. Majjagi said it indicated the communication gap between officials and told them to take quick action.
