Veteran writer Amrut Someshwar said here on Monday that the ‘vachanas’ of 12th century saint and composer Ambigara Chowdayya reflected the voice of common people.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating a function to mark the Ambigara Chowdayya jayanthi celebrations at the University College, Mr. Someshwar said that about 300 ‘vachanas’ of the late Chowdayya were available at present.
He wrote the ‘vachanas’ with confidence.

He said that many inscriptions, which had been found so far, only glorified kings and chieftains. But ‘vachanas’ of various saints did echo the sentiments of the common man.
The writer said that one should rise above caste distinctions.
If people remained attached to their caste identity it would get in the way of their personality development and only push them down in life.

K. A. Dayananda, Additional Deputy Commissioner, said that the late Chowdayya wrote ‘vachanas’ without any fear.
Lalaji R. Mendon, MLA, Kaup, K. N. Vijay Prakash, Chief Executive Officer, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Harish Kumar K., Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation were present.
