Centre criticised for downsizing allocation to Education in Union Budget

Municipal Administration Minister Qamarul Islam giving away cash prize to a girl student who topped in PUC examinations.

The Municipal Administration and Minority Affairs Minister, Qamarul Islam took a dig at the Union Government for downsizing the budgetary allocation for the education sector by Rs 38,000 crore and said that the State government has increased the allocation to the sector to Rs 21,000 crore in the State budget.

Speaking after giving away the awards to the meritorious Kannada medium students who had scored high marks in the SSLC and PUC examinations in the Hyderabad Karnataka region in Kalaburagi on Sunday, Mr. Islam said the State government would continue to support the education sector, which was one of the key sector for improving the living standards of the people.

He said that the Union, instead of increasing the allocation to the education sector and help the state governments to improve the infrastructure facilities in the schools, had downsized the allocation from the previous Rs 1.06 lakh crore to Rs 68,000 crore.

Mr. Islam said that the government would stand by its commitment to fill up 33,000 vacant posts in the Hyderabad Karnataka region and the process of the recruitment would start soon. Terming the State budget presented by Mr. Siddaramaiah as “well balanced budget” covering all sections of the society and extending welfare measures to the deprived sections of the society.

He said that in the budget the Chief Minister has allocated a sum of Rs. 5 crore to the Kannada Development Authority (KDA). The Minister gave away the cash awards ranging from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 6,000 along with a commendation certificate, a college back dictionaries and a watch to each of the 114 students who excelled in the SSLC Examinations and 100 students who excelled in the PUC examinations.
