CCTV cameras and the dip in pass percentage...

May 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Vijayapura/Bagalkot:

Does the installation of CCTV cameras have anything to do with the dip in SSLC results ranking and poor performance?

This is a line of defence being taken by officials of the Department of Public Instruction in both Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts. They said that installation of CCTV cameras had curbed the malpractices in the exams, which has led to the twin-districts not doing well in result rankings.

By saying this, the officials have indirectly admitted that the districts, until last year, were securing higher ranks because of high incidence of malpractices. This year, Bagalkot district has slipped to 30th position from 10. Although Vijayapura district has risen one notch to rank 31 from 32 last year, its pass percentage has come down.

Speaking to The Hindu , S.S. Biradar, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Vijayapura, said that the installation of CCTV had prevented students from making any movement during the exams.

Of the 100 exam centres in Vijayapura, CCTV cameras were installed in 30 centres this year, while in Bagalkot, 72 of 94 centres had CCTV cameras. “Next year, we will have all exams centres equipped with CCTV cameras, it would further strengthen our monitoring of exams,” Mr. Biradar said.
