Cabinet decides on making Kannadaa language in High Court proceedings

The State Cabinet on Wednesday decided to make Kannada as a language in the High Court proceedings, along with English. With Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Odisha taking steps to use their respective official State languages in High Court proceedings, a Cabinet meeting, presided by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday decided to make Kannada as a language in Karnataka High Court proceedings.

Official sources in the State Secretariat told The Hindu that the Cabinet decision would be forwarded to President Pranab Mukherjee through the Governor of the State. The lower courts in the State have been issuing judgments in Kannada.

At present, High Court proceedings are conducted in English. Judgments are being issued in English because it is the official language of the High Court as determined by the Constitution, sources said.

The Cabinet decided to upgrade seven town municipal councils — Siraguppa, Shidlaghatta, Ullal, Hoskote, Nanjangud, Hiriyur, Kanakapura — to City Municipal Councils. Two town panchayats — Kudachi and Sadalaga — would be upgraded as town municipal councils.

A decision has been taken to provide a government guarantee to Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Ltd. to raise Rs. 1,100 crore through bonds. Funds would be used for completion of ongoing irrigation projects in north Karnataka.

It was decided to constitute an expert committee to suggest recommendations to the State Sugar Control Board to fix the sugarcane price. A decision has been taken to release Rs. 14.25 crore for construction of houses for officials of the Chickballapur, Ramanagaram and Yadgir zilla panchayats.

It was decided to transfer three acres of land belonging to the Public Works Department to the Health and Family Welfare Department in Ramaganaram town for construction of a district hospital.
