Businessman, family given security after extortion threat

Abhinav Khare, Superintendent of Police, said adequate security has been provided to the family of a businessman from the district who had allegedly received an extortion call from underworld operative Ravi Poojary.

“Three police personnel armed with guns have been deputed to provide security for the family of the businessman. As part of the investigation taken up in this regard, a local police team has visited New Delhi and Mumbai to collect additional information,” he told presspersons here on Friday.

Mr. Khare said the investigation has ascertained that the call was made by Mr. Poojary. The call was made 45 days ago and a huge ransom was demanded.

Following this, the police have maintained a vigil over the activities of the associates of Mr. Poojary. Based on the complaint lodged by the businessman, they have booked a case under section 384 (punishment for extortion) of the Indian Penal Code against Mr. Poojary, he said.
