The Mudigere police on Sunday evening arrested a leader of the BJP Yuva Morcha on the charge of abetting the suicide of 20-year-old college student Dhanyashree.

Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai said the arrest of M.V. Anil of Mudigere had been made based on a suicide note recovered from the scene. The police are interrogating him.

The girl had committed suicide at her residence on Saturday. According to the suicide note, she was upset as a group of five persons, including Anil, had picked up a quarrel with her after accusing her of being friends with a Muslim boy.

“The five had visited her home on Saturday evening and picked up an argument with the girl and her mother. The group had accused that the girl was roaming with a Muslim boy, and thereby, paving the way for ‘Love Jihad’. Upset over the development, she committed suicide,” Mr. Annamalai told presspersons.

The police, after recovering the death note, registered a case of abetment to suicide. Two teams have been constituted to arrest those involved in the incident. “We have listed five accused as per the note. One among them has been arrested,” the officer said.

The police have also recovered the girl’s phone. They have learnt that the picture where the girl was seen with the Muslim boy was circulated widely on social media platforms. “Many have made comments on the picture. We will arrest all those who harassed her orally or through social media. We have taken the case seriously and our teams are working to arrest the accused,” Mr. Annamalai said.
