March 24, 2013 02:55 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:07 pm IST - BANGALORE:

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which was one of the first political outfits to tap the potential of new media, has set up an exclusive wing comprising communication experts and software professionals to assist in reaching out to urbanites in the run-up to the Assembly polls on May 5.

According to BJP State media in-charge S. Prakash, the party is keen on using Twitter and Facebook extensively in the poll campaign this time. The party has also decided to take up webcasting of its campaign meetings.

“Our poll campaign through the new media (Twitter and Facebook) will commence in about 10 days from now,” he said, while pointing out that the party would continue to use emails and SMSes to reach out to voters as it did in the previous Assembly polls.

Besides, the party is also maintaining an active website that provides information about its activities.

Party leaders feel that social media is an effective tool to reach out to the urban middle class, as normally it is difficult to meet them at their houses since a majority of them work till late in the night at their offices or will be away on travel.
