The district Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for unity among leaders of all political parties to convince the State government as well as the centre to establish Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) either at Belagavi or Dharwad, which would go long way in bridging the gaps in the regional imbalances in the North Karnataka region.
Ironically, the call for united efforts to get IIT for the region has come after five days since the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced to recommend Raichur, Hubballi-Dharwad and Mysuru to the Centre to establish the proposed IIT in the State.
BJP district President Eranna Kadadi said here on Thursday that it is time that leaders and people of North Karnataka region join hands and take up to issue so that they do not miss a great opportunity to have a prestigious institution like IIT in the region, which would help further development and progress of the region and its people.

He said though the State government had established Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi - the second seat of State power - except for winter sessions of the legislature and occasional review meetings by various legislature committees and minister, this massive structure has been rendered under-utilised. The government had been ignoring the need to shift some of the departments having more relevance to the North Karnataka region for reasons best known to it.
The Chief Minister had been assuring establishment of the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal bench in Belagavi since a year but yet to implement the promise.
All these “don’ts” of the Congress government portray the bias and indifferent attitude of government towards North Karnataka region. Hence, the leaders of the district and region rise to the occasion and make common cause not only to get IIT at Dharwad or Belagavi but also work hard for expeditious development and progress of the region, Mr. Kadadi said.
