Award after U.S. Mallya

The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will institute an honorary award after Ullal Srinivas Mallya, who is considered the architect of erstwhile Mangalore. The award comprising ₹2 lakh in cash, a citation and a memento will be presented from this year, according to Mayor Kavita Sanil.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, she said that MCC would also present three more awards after the late Mr. Mallya from this year. It would be for those who have made significant contribution in the fields of sports, arts and education. Each of the three awards will comprise ₹50,000 in cash, a citation and a memento.

The awards will be presented on November 21, the birth anniversary of U.S. Mallya. She said that a committee has been formed to select the recipients. The Mayor said a proposal on the same would be moved in the monthly meeting of the council on August 31 for the information of councillors. The guidelines for selecting the candidates for the awards would be formed by taking suggestions from the committee.

U.S. Mallya was instrumental in setting up the New Mangalore Port, the then Karnataka Regional Engineering College (now NIT-K) at Surathkal, airport in Bajpe and a bridge across the Netravathi. He was Member of Parliament and also participated in the freedom struggle.
