A 23-year-old security guard was stabbed to death by two persons when he resisted their attempt to loot an IDBI ATM kiosk on the Outer Ring Road at Mahadevapura early on Monday. However, in a swift action, the police nabbed the accused within hours of the crime.

The guard, Harishankar Sharma, a native of Madhya Pradesh, was posted at the ATM centre at Doddanakundi barely a fortnight ago.

The Mahadevapura police identified the accused as Jinto Debnath (21) and Nabho Kour (19), both from Assam.

The duo was working as caretakers of pet dogs belonging to a city-based businessman living in an apartment in Mahadevapura for the past one year. According to the police, they decided to loot the ATM to become rich overnight and zeroed in on IDBI bank ATM kiosk.

According to the police, the two barged into the ATM around 3.30 a.m. and tried to break open the machine. Sharma, who was on guard outside, rushed into the kiosk and there was a scuffle, following which one of them pulled out a knife and stabbed Sharma on his head repeatedly.

The duo later switched off the lights and tried to break open the machine. Meanwhile, police constables attached to Mahadevapura police station — Chikkanarasimhaiah and Manjunath Swamy — who were on night patrol, were passing by the ATM kiosk and found two men inside. Upon closer examination, they realised that the men were trying to break open the machine.

They immediately alerted the control room and tried to block the entrance to prevent the men from escaping. But, the duo smashed the glass doors and managed to escape.

Chikkanarasimhaiah and Manjunath tried to chase them, but in vain. They returned to the ATM to find Sharma lying on the ground profusely bleeding with multiple injuries on the head and a serious stab wound on the forehead.

They immediately rushed Sharma to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
