The death toll in the temple ‘prasada’ case is mounting with each passing day even as doctors at the State-run K.R. Hospital are preparing to discharge some patients on Wednesday.

Dundamma, 50, from M.M. Hills breathed her last at a private hospital here on Tuesday taking the death toll to 15. The condition of a few patients continues to be serious. The hospitals here are treating around 90 patients with some of them still on ventilator support and in ICU. K.R. Hospital medical superintendent K. Srinivas told The Hindu that barring four patients who were shifted to the emergency ward from the ICU, the remaining would be discharged after taking necessary clearance from the doctors handling them since the incident. The Mysuru City Corporation has come forward to arrange transportation for the discharged patients, he said.

Minister in-charge of Chamarajanagar district Puttaranga Shetty and Hanur MLA R. Narendra distributed relief cheques of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

Psychological trauma

Meanwhile, the victims are being screened for psychological trauma before being discharged. Psychiatrists from Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI) have been interacting with the patients at K.R. Hospital and counselling them accordingly to overcome the shock.

Raveesh B.N., Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, MMCRI, said that the patients were being personally assessed for psychological trauma as there is a tendency of victims remaining in shock and may need some support to overcome it. “If the patients need any medication and follow-up treatment, K.R. Hospital was ready to provide them and assess their condition until they return to their routine,” he said.
