The Bangalore district committee of the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) held a protest here on Friday demanding re-introduction of the pass-fail system till Class 8.
The protesters pointed out that a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development had made some serious observations on the quality of education under the Right to Education Act and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.
The report said a student might not be motivated to work hard to learn if he/she was aware that his promotion to the next grade was guaranteed. The committee recommended that the department rethink its policy of automatic promotion up to Class 8.

V.N. Rajashekar, State president of AIDSO said: “We opposed the ‘No detention policy’ when it was implemented in some States. It will jeopardise the future of the younger generation and dwarf their mental faculties and intellectual abilities.”
Observations
The committee observed that in 2010, 46.3 per cent of children in Class 5 could not read text books for Class 2. The figure is 53 per cent now and in government schools it was 58.3 per cent.

The AIDSO submitted a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister to the Governor.
