October 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - DHARWAD:

The State Human Rights Commission has registered a suo motu case against the authorities of Dharwad Central Jail following the recent agitation by inmates.

Commission member and retired judge C.G. Hungund, who visited the jail on Saturday, said the they had taken note of the media reports about the indefinite hunger strike by the inmates to air their grievances against the poor quality and insufficient quantity of food supplied to them. The commission has asked the Central Jail Advisory Board to give an explanation in two weeks. Further action would be taken after getting the report from the board, he said.

During the visit, prison inmates had complained about the lapses in the jail. They have also demanded that the authorities allow making of scented sticks and candles in the jail so that the prisoners can earn some money.
