Advice to the electronic media

Sir, — It is ridiculous to see the electronic media unnecessarily sensationalising the death of Sunanda Pushkar. With due respect to their freedom of speech, with daily panel discussions, are they not derailing the investigation which gained some momentum? It is the prerogative of the investigating officer to unearth the mystery and bring the wrongdoers to book.

No matter how big and influential the culprit is, the law of our land is competent enough to punish them.

The panel discussions would pave way for the culprit to find some loophole to escape from the clutches of the law-enforcing agencies. In our nation crime happens every day and law will take its own course.

Just because the deceased was a celebrity, the attention given by the media is too much. I think there are bigger issues that the electronic media should focus on.

The politics of rape

Sir, — It is two years since a seven-year-old girl was mercilessly raped in a school toilet in Vasco. While the little girl and her grief-stricken parents relentlessly quest for justice, the alleged rapist and his accomplice are still free-birds. The girl’s family being very poor, justice should not have eluded them, but the authorities succeeded in a cover-up and botching up the investigation. What was very shattering, however, was that despite this heinous crime, the then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar never even cared to visit the victim and her grieving family. If the victim was a daughter of a Minister, a businessman or an affluent citizen, the case would have been solved in a day or two if not hours. Indeed, sorrowful is the state of law and order in Goa. We are living in times where justice is no longer our right. We have courts to ensure justice, but if courts also turn into monsters of injustice, we will end up in a lawless jungle. Let us continue to keep the little wounded girl and her shattered family in our thoughts.

Intercity nowhere

in sight

Sir, — Almost all the trains for our State that were announced in the Railway Budget 2014-15 have been flagged off except the intercity express train between Kalaburagi and Hyderabad . Although its timing is not convenient, we are ready to welcome the train. It appears there is no sign of it moving on the track in the near future. We hope the train starts functioning before the Railway Budget for 2015-16 is tabled in Parliament.
