A floral welcome for Lord Krishna in Udupi

September 17, 2014 10:38 am | Updated 10:38 am IST - Udupi:

Flower sellers from other districts selling flowers on the Car Street in Udupi on Tuesday.

Car Street, on which the Sri Krishna Mathand the other eight maths or Ashta Maths are located, wore a colourful look on the occasion of Sri Krishna Janmashtami here on Wednesday.

Flower sellers from other districts had brought flowers and sat on two neat rows on either side of Car Street. Most of them come to Udupi from places such as Hassan and Chikmagalur on all major festivals to sell flowers. While some of them are growers as well , the others purchase the flowers in their home districts and sell it here. The flowers are sold in ‘maarus’. One ‘maaru’ has approximately 250 flowers tied to one another.

Most of them said that the business had been poor this time. Raje Gowda had brought flowers worth Rs. 10,000 from Athni village in Arkalgud taluk of Hassan district. “I came with a group of eight flower sellers in a taxi. It is a loss this time as we are selling a ‘maaru’ of ‘sevantige’ at just Rs. 10,” he said.

Lakshmamma from Arkalgud said that she had come with a group of nine flower sellers. “When compared to last year, the sales are disappointing. A ‘maaru’ of flowers should be sold for at least Rs. 50 for us to make a profit,” she said.
