Water level comes down in the Krishna

With the water level in the Krishna coming down considerably, traffic movement on the Kollur bridge near Kollur village of Surpur taluk was normal on Friday.

The bridge was on the verge of being submerged on Thursday night as officials of Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd. were releasing water at the rate of more than 2 lakh cusecs from the Narayanapur reservoir into the Krishna for the past two days. Water at the rate of 80,000 cusecs was released into the river at 1 p.m. on Friday as inflow into the Narayanpur reservoir from the Almatti dam went down in the wake of less rain in the catchment areas of the Krishna.

Marooned island

Meanwhile, Revenue officials have kept foodgrains and medicine ready on the mainland to supply to the marooned residents of Neelakantarayanagaddi island.

The residents were cut off from the mainland again as the Krishna was in spate following heavy discharge of water from the Narayanpur reservoir. Officials were set to supply essential commodities and medicine to the needy on Friday, sources said.

Those found ill would be brought to the mainland by a boat and they would be provided medical treatment at the primary health centre at Kakkera, they said.

Sources also said that a few residents swam across the river on Friday morning and reached the mainland to purchase household stuff.
