The survey for setting up a jelly crusher unit was postponed following protests by the people, mostly farmers and women, here on Friday.
The people of the village blocked the personnel of the Revenue and other departments, who had come with police protection, to carry out the survey.
Though Udupi tahsildar T.J. Guruprasad tried to pacify the protesters, they did not oblige. There were arguments between the protesters and a few individuals who wanted to get the survey done.

Mr. Guruprasad told the protesters that there was an injunction order from a court in Udupi for carrying out the survey at a particular survey number and it should be allowed.
The protesters said that they were not against the survey, but were against the proposed stone quarry unit which would be set up there. They also pointed out that if a survey had to be carried out for a stone crusher unit, they should have been issued notices by the authorities, but it was not done.
When the officers said that a notice had been issued on June 14, the protesters reiterated that no notices had reached them. For some time, there were arguments between both the sides. The protesters said that they too had approached the court on the stone crusher unit issue. The situation became tense after a person supporting the survey said that the protesters should be lathi-charged. The police prevented the situation from going out of hand. Later, the survey was postponed. Mr. Guruprasad told presspersons that a meeting of residents of the village including elders and local leaders would be called on June 21.
