Continuing its drive against the use of plastic in the city, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) on Monday sealed two shops in Mandi Mohalla after seizing plastic articles from their premises.

During a surprise inspection at a tea stall, MCC officials recovered several plastic cups. Similarly, the officials also found large quantities of plastic cups, carry bags and plastic and thermocol plates at a provisions store.

“We recovered about 25 kg of banned plastic items,” said MCC Health Officer Nagaraj. According to the instructions of Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep, the trade licences of the two shop owners have been suspended temporarily and the shops sealed, he said.

Though the MCC has been carrying out surprise inspections and has seized large quantities of banned plastic items across the city over the past few months, this is the first time the civic body has resorted to sealing the shops. The issue was also discussed during a recent review meeting in the city chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who was particular about enforcing the ban to make Mysuru completely plastic-free, Mr. Nagaraj said.

“We have received instructions to seal the shops found using or selling plastic items,” he said.

On Saturday, the MCC carried out an elaborate drive against plastic across all nine zones in Mysuru. “A large amount of plastic was seized and a penalty of ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh collected,” he said.
