Foreign couples adopt two children with special needs in Hassan

Children with special needs are rarely preferred for adoption. But, in a heart-warming incident, two such children were adopted by foreign couples in Hassan on Friday.

The couples adopted babies, who were listed by the Hassan-based Thavaru Charitable Trust. Joshua Andrew Brook and Kaylee Taylor from Finland adopted one-and-half-a-year old Purvik, a boy with cleft lip and palate, besides limb anomalies. Taranathpur Ruban and Eva from the U.S. adopted Gowthami, a one-and-half-a-year old girl who is Hepatitis B positive.

They chose the babies through the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. H.K. Phalaksha, founder of the trust, told

Both couples already have a child each, and showed interest to adopt babies with special needs and take care of them. Mr. Brook told media persons: “I am happy to get this child. He is my second son. I wish he studies well and becomes an engineer!” His wife was also in a celebratory mood. Mr. Ruban and Ms. Eva have a 10-year-old son.

“Normally, Indian parents look for healthy babies for adoption. They hardly show interest to adopt children who require special care. Whereas, foreigners adopt such kids and provide them good care and shelter. I wish Indians emulate them,” Dr. Phalaksha said.
