Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has not only planning to replace the existing sodium vapour and metal halide streetlights in the city with energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED), but has also proposed to operate streetlights through web-based technology.
Presenting the MCC Budget for 2016-17 on Tuesday, Chairman of the MCC’s Standing Committee on Taxation, Finance and Appeals S. Balu said the civic body was presently depending on human resources to turn on and off the switches of the streetlights. “We will change the process by adopting web-based technology. We will take up the project in association with a private company,” he said.
The other highlights of the Rs. 810.50 crore budget includes the setting up of solar power generating units in prominent public parks and crematoria.

The budget, however, was flayed by several members of the MCC cutting across party lines. BJP member Nandeesh Preetam wondered why the budget had not accounted for the more than Rs. 100 crore dues to be paid to contractors, while Congress member and former Mayor Ayub Khan described it as an “Old wine in new bottle”. “Most of the proposals in the budget are a repetition of last year’s proposals,” he said.
