Special cell to monitor cow vigilante cases in DK

Headed by a Dy.SP, it will ensure their speedy trial

Dakshina Kannada district, which has seen several cow vigilante attacks followed by communal tension over the last decade, has now set up a monitoring cell headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police to ensure speedy trial.

Superintendent of Police Bhushan Gulabrao Borase told

The Hindu that this cell would follow every case, ensure that court summons are served to witnesses and they appear on the date of trial. The officer would be in touch with the prosecutor and work with him in presenting the cases before the court in an effective manner. The cell has just started compiling cases and the coordination process is in progress.

“If the trial was speeded up, the outcome of the judgment would send a message to others not to resort to such acts,” Mr. Borase said. “We are ensuring that the trial concerning communal incidents is completed as early as possible, and the accused are convicted in the cases.”

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) J. Arun Chakravarthy said stern action is being taken, including invoking Goonda Act, against those indulging in cow vigilante attacks.

As directed by Director General and Inspector General of Police Om Prakash, Mr. Chakravarthy said the police in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, and Uttara Kannada have been keeping a watch on groups involved in cattle vigilantism. He said that check-posts have been set up for monitoring illegal transport of cattle and illegal movement of sand.
