Scanner on waste disposal scam

The State Government on Tuesday admitted that crores of rupees had been misappropriated by 30 contractors in the disposal of solid waste in Bangalore City.

In a reply to Roshan Baig of the Congress during Question Hour in the Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said a CID probe had been ordered into alleged misappropriation of funds in the disposal of waste in the city by contractors. However, following a writ petition, the Karnataka High Court had granted stay in its interim order issued on November 17 and December 2, 2009, respectively, he said.

A sum of Rs. 84.13 crore and Rs. 60.36 crore had been sanctioned for 2008-09 and 2009-10, respectively, for disposal of waste. A new system would be introduced for disposal of waste only after the expiry of the term of contractors on March 31, 2010. A meeting of city MLAs would be called to discuss the waste disposal system, he said.

Stating that action would be taken against contractors for misappropriation of funds, Mr. Yeddyurappa said CCTV cameras would be installed at the BBMP Commissioner’s office to monitor disposal of waste from start to end points.

Earlier, Mr. Baig said there were six dumping yards in the city for disposal of waste. There was a mafia in the waste disposal scam, he said, and urged the Government to blacklist 30 contractors who had allegedly looted the funds.
