The Mandya Zilla Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti has announced a district-wide “jail bharo” agitation on Monday against the release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu.

An upset G. Made Gowda, samiti president and former MP, has requested one person per family in the district to participate in the “jail bharo” protest.

Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, Mr. Gowda termed Chief Minister Jagadish’s Shettar’s government a “foolish government”.

“We had congratulated the Chief Minister when he assured us of not releasing water to Tamil Nadu as the farmers here are reeling under severe drought. However, he broke his promise by releasing water at midnight,” Mr. Gowda said.

Everyone, who is concerned about our farmers’ community, should participate in the protest. But, they should not seek help to get released from jail. Such people need not participate in the protest, Mr. Gowda said. He added: “We will intensify protest demonstration across the district.”
