Reservoirs filling up in Belagavi district

Good rainfall in many areas

The fresh downpour since last three days in district and catchment areas of the rivers has revived hopes of seeing the reservoirs getting full soon.

The district received a total of 285.7 mm rainfall from August 1 to 3. The normal rainfall for August is 1,237 mm. Belagavi and Khanapur taluks were receiving good rainfall, including Khanapur town and Belagavi city, transforming low-lying areas into mini-lagoons. Paddy fields and other farms are full with water and the open-wells in the city were also almost full due to recharge of water tables.

According to Executive Engineer of Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board Prasanna Murthy, the water level in the Rakaskopp dam across Markandeya river at Rakaskop village, which is the main source of drinking water for Belagavi city, was steadily increasing and touched 2471.60 ft. as on Wednesday at 6 a.m. Another 4.90 ft. of water was required to reach the brim. The level at the dam rose by 0.40 ft. during the last 24 hours from around 50.10 mm rainfall received since yesterday. The storage level in the dam increased by 29.50 ft.since the onset of monsoon this year.

Official sources said the Raja Lakhmagouda reservoir (Hidkal dam) across Ghataprabha river at Hidkal of Hukkeri taluk was receiving an inflow of 7,349 cusecs since morning. The live storage at the dam had touched 24.19 tmc ft. as against the gross storage level of 26.21 tmc ft.

There was also marginal improvement in the storage level at Navilteerth dam across Malaprabha river in Saudatti taluk with the live storage going up to 5.80 tmc ft. as against the gross storage of 9.2555 tmc ft. The dam was receiving an inflow of 3,449 cusecs.
