Rain batters Shivamogga district

Torrential downpour pounded the district on Monday owing to which life was paralysed.

The rain, which commenced at 8 a.m. in Bhadravati, continued throughout the day. School-going children and office-goers were put to hardship owing to the rain.

Strong winds accompanied the rain resulting in branches of tress falling on National Highway 206 near Sirivante owing to which movement of vehicles between Sagar and Talaguppa was affected.

In the wake of the monsoon intensifying, the work of preparation of nurseries of paddy seedlings, called

makkigadde in the rain-fed areas of Tirthahalli, Sagar and Hosanagar taluks, has commenced.

Owing to heavy rain in the catchment area of the Sharavati, the water level in Linganamakki reservoir is up by four feet in a span of 24 hours. The water level in the reservoir was at 1,769 feet with an inflow of 26,424 cusecs.

The water level in Bhadra reservoir was at 129 feet against the maximum level of 186 feet. An inflow of 12,114 cusec was recorded here.

The Tunga was in spate as 24,808 cusecs of water was discharged from Gajanur reservoir.

Meanwhile, Mastikatte received 219 mm of rainfall, followed by 206 mm in Hulikal, 158 mm in Yadur, 156 mm in Mani and 151 mm in Agumbe.
