Over 1,000 police vacancies to be filled this year: Yeddyurappa

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Monday said government will fill 1,000 vacancies in the police department this year to augment force’s strength.

Addressing the investiture ceremony of the Karnataka Police force here, he said 1136 vacancies in the department would be filled this year.

Emphasising the pivotal role played by police in ensuring good governance in the State, Mr. Yeddyurappa said his government has provided the necessary funds and equipment needed for strengthening the police force.

He said seven new police stations will be established in Ramanagaram, Tumkur, Chitradurga and Bellary districts and ten police outposts will be converted as regular police stations this year.

Steps have already been taken to promote 968 Police Constables to Head Constables and 290 Head Constables to Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Mr. Yeddyurappa said.

Earlier Home Minister V S Acharya, congratulating the awardees, said fifty new police stations would be established this year.

Highlighting the various measures taken by the government to ensure law and order, he said besides strengthening the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) in Karavali region, a police Commissionerate has been established in Mangalore.

Apart from an increased allocation of Rs 250 crore for the police department in recent State budget, the government proposes to build 4331 houses for police personnel this year, Mr. Acharya said.
