B.R. Satyanarayana, who demitted office as Hassan Zilla Panchayat president on Tuesday, said he was satisfied with the work he could do during his 11-month term.

Ambika Ramanna will assume office as the zilla panchayat president on Wednesday.

Mr. Satyanarayana told journalists that he introduced teaching for SSLC students with audio-visual equipment with the help of Vivekananda Youth Movement, an NGO, in select schools and this improved the results. “We selected 110 schools, where the results were below average the previous year, for this programme. The results in these schools improved in 2012 and helped the district get third position in the State in SSLC results,” he said.

“Nearly Rs. 10 lakh was spent on recharging more than 30 borewells in drought-affected areas. If it rains, our exercise will yield results,” he said. He demanded that the Union government increase the amount allocated for recharging borewells under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 25,000.

Sulochana Ramakrishna, vice-president of the zilla panchayat, whose term also ended on Tuesday, was also present at the press conference.
