No more classes on the terrace

Deputy Commissioner tells head master to make alternative arrangements

The students as well as teachers of the Government Higher Primary and High School at Kyasamballi in Bangarpet taluk on Tuesday heaved a sigh of relief as the practice of conducting classes on the open terrace is being discontinued.

Classes for grade ten students were being held on the terrace. On Tuesday, they were held in the assembly hall on the directions of Deputy Commissioner K.V. Thrilokchandra, following a report ‘Lesson number 1: don’t go too close to the edge’ in The Hindu .

Mr. Thrilokchandra told

The Hindu that he will send the Deputy Director of Public Instructions (DDPI) to the school to inspect the conditions there. “A proposal will be sent to the government for construction of additional classrooms,” he said.

Later in the day, Mr. Thrilokchandra discussed the matter with the DDPI N. Anjanappa and the head master of the school S. Siddaraju during a meeting of head masters of high schools at T. Chennaiah Rangamandira in Kolar.

Mr. Siddaraju, who took charge a few months ago, maintained that the shortage of classrooms is due to holding classes for high school on the premises of a higher primary school. Land to house the high school needs to be identified and allotted, he told The Hindu .

Several of his predecessors tried to solve the problem, but in vain due to the absence of land, he added.

Bangarpet Block Education Officer (BEO) Jairaj visited the school on Tuesday evening. “Strict warning was given against conducting classes on the rooftop, as it involves risks,” he told The Hindu over telephone after the visit. The classes will be conducted in the available rooms till additional rooms are constructed, he added.
