Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC) president H.C. Bore Gowda on Thursday proved his majority at a special general body meeting by defeating the no-confidence motion by three votes. Some councillors, from the ruling Congress and the Opposition Janata Dal (Secular), had moved the no-confidence motion against the veteran Congress leader recently. Subsequently, the meeting was convened.
Of the 35 members in the CMC, 18 voted against the president. While 13 voted in his favour of Mr. Bore Gowda, two members, Puttathayamma and Shashikumar, were absent.
Two members, B. Siddaraju and M.P. Arunkumar, had abstained from the voting though they were present during the meeting.

As the minimum number of votes required for passing the no-confidence motion was 21, T.N. Narasimha Murthy, Commissioner of CMC, declared that Mr. Bore Gowda had proved his majority to continue as president.
Mr. Bore Gowda, three-time councillor, had been elected as the president of the CMC on March 16, 2016.
Meanwhile, some members, who were against the president, alleged that some of those who initially supported the motion “succumbed to the pressure or became beneficiaries of horse trading.”

The strength of the Congress in the CMC is 15. The Janata Dal (Secular) has nine councillors. The CMC has 10 Independent councillors and a BJP member.
