The recent hike in the prices of Nandini varieties of milk by the Karnataka Milk Federation has put milk vendors in Mysore in a quandary.
According to the vendors, consumers are under the impression that prices of all Nandini varieties of milk have been increased by Rs. 3 a litre and they are being accused of collecting Rs. 1 extra for every litre of homogenised cow's milk, standardised milk, full-cream milk and double toned milk.
While the price of toned milk has been increased by Rs. 3 a litre, the prices of of homogenised cow's milk, standardised milk, full-cream milk and double toned milk have been increased by Rs. 4 a litre. The price of curds has been increased by Rs. 4 a kg.

“As there is an impression that the prices of all Nandini varieties of milk have been increased by Rs. 3 a litre, customers argue with us when we rightly collect an additional Rs. 4 a litre of milk varieties other than toned milk,” said Mysore-Chamarajanagar Milk Federation Authorised Nandini Milk Vendors Association president Kumar.
“The hike is in the range of Rs. 3 to Rs. 4 a litre of all Nandini varieties of milk, but this has not been properly communicated to people, leading to the confusion,” he told presspersons here on Friday. Mr. Kumar demanded that the Mysore Milk Union issue a statement and clear the confusion over the milk price hike. He said that vendors had been getting a commission of Rs. 3.50 for selling milk worth of Rs. 100. However, the commission had not been revised since the last several years.
“Our demand for increasing the commission to Rs. 6 has not been considered in spite of repeated appeals since last one year,” Mr. Kumar said.

Demanding revision of the commission, milk vendors from Mysore and Chamarajanagar would stage a dharna in front of the Mysore Milk Union on April 12 at 11 a.m., he said.
