Following heavy rain in the Western Ghats in Maharashtra and in the Krishna basin, the Krishna is now flowing above the danger level in Bagalkot district.
The Krishna, Malaprabha and the Ghataprabha did not have enough water in the last two years. This year, due to incessant rains, the water level has gone up in these rivers. The district administration of Vijayapura and Bagalkot has issued warnings to the people residing on the banks to maintain high alert or move to safer places.
Some 38 villages in Jamkhandi and Bilagi taluks of Bagalkot district are prone to flood and a special alert has been issued.

Officials of the Revenue Department have been directed by the district administration to be ready to tackle any eventuality.
Hipparagi dam, one of the small dams in Bagalkot district, needs only 0.8 tmcft of water more to reach the total capacity of 4.84 tmcft. Sources said that it was expected to reach the full storage level by Thursday evening.
A barrage built across the Krishna at Chikkapadasalagi village in Jamkhandi taluk is already overflowing. Till just a couple of months ago, the barrage was dry.

Meanwhile, the inflow into the Almatti Dam in Vijayapura district is at the rate of two lakh cusecs on Wednesday and it is increasing. On Thursday, the dam the storage level in the dam was 68.343 tmcft and the total capacity was 123 tmcft. The inflow was at the rate of 1.75 lakh cusecs.
