October 23, 2010 12:19 pm | Updated 12:19 pm IST - Madikeri:

Amidst increasing opposition to the move to accord world heritage site tag to the wildlife sanctuaries in Kodagu, the former MLC A.K. Subbaiah on Friday urged people, political parties and organisations to take up cudgels against it.

B.T. Dinesh and Rozy Chinnappa of the Nalknad Farmers' Club, Nanda Subbaiah of the Small Growers (Coffee) Association, who joined Mr. Subbaiah, blamed certain environmentalists in the district for the visit of the two-member International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) team here a few days ago. Mr. Subbaiah said efforts would be made to apprise Unesco and the Centre of the opposition to the projects in Kodagu by staging protests and demonstrations.

Naming the persons working under a leader as “eco terrorists”, Mr. Subbaiah said how could any project be taken up without the knowledge of the people and elected representatives.
