Injured wrestler dies post-surgery

He was injured during State Olympics Meet; Compensation of ₹5 lakh announced

The body of wrestler Santosh Dymanna Hosamani was taken out in a procession in Dharwad on Tuesday. Santosh had injured himself during a wrestling bout at the State Olympics Meet in Dharwad recently.

A young wrestler, who was admitted to a hospital after he was injured during a wrestling match at the recently-concluded State Olympics Meet in Dharwad, died of a cardiac arrest caused by complications developed post-surgery, here on Tuesday.

Santosh Dymanna Hosamani, 21, retired from the bout after he was injured during a match with Mohammed Ali Pailwan of Davanagere in Dharwad. A native of Chikkamalligawad village in Dharwad taluk, Santosh was shifted to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital as his right thigh bone had broken.

Eight hours

On Monday, Santosh had been in surgery for nearly eight hours. At 11 a.m on Tuesday, he developed complications leading to a cardiac arrest and his death, sources said.

R.M. Doddamani, District Health Officer, said that regular follow-up on Mr. Santosh’s health was carried out by him personally. He said that he had met the wrestler on Thursday evening and was in touch with his doctors and attenders. He added that he had spoken to Dattatreya Bant, KIMS Director and Kammar, Head of the Orthopaedics Department, on the phone on the day of the surgery. On Monday night, he had arranged for the blood for the patient at 10 p.m.

Dr. Doddamani told

The Hindu that as per the doctors who attended to the patient, the cause of death was embolism (obstruction in a blood vessel owing to a blood clot or other foreign matter that gets stuck while travelling through bloodstream) leading to a cardiac arrest.

Compensation sought

Following the death of the wrestler, there was high drama at the KIMS premises with the family members and relatives demanding a compensation of ₹25 lakh and a job on compassionate grounds to one of the family members.

Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad S.B. Bommanahalli announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh to the kin and also a janata plot. Chairman of North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation Sadanand Danganavar visited the hospital and pacified the family members. The district-in-charge Minister Vinay Kulkarni condoled the death in a message.

Subsequently, the wrestlers’ body was taken out in a procession to his native village Chikkamalligawad with several wrestlers and well-wishers leading the procession on motorcycles.
