Schoolchildren should be taught concepts such as ‘shramadan’ and environmental protection in primary classes, District Principal and Sessions Judge V. Shreeshananda has said.
Inaugurating a tree plantation drive on the government primary school premises in Managundi village near here on Wednesday, he said that teachers should strive to inculcate such qualities among children so that they grow up as responsible citizens.
Expressing regret over the practice of spending a lot of money on birthday programmes, Mr. Shreeshananda said that it would be more meaningful if children were made to plant a sapling instead of cutting a cake. At the same it was important to ensure that the planted saplings were given due care, he said.

“Our ancestors were more aware about the need to protect the environment. There used to be no imbalance in weather conditions during then. However, rapid urbanisation is posing a serious threat to the very existence of humans and other species. Enhancing the green coverage through such drives may help mitigate the seriousness of the situation,” Mr. Shreeshananda added.
