HIMS attack: Doctors’ association seeks better security

January 04, 2017 03:26 pm | Updated 06:33 pm IST - Hassan:

Taking exception to the recent attack on junior doctors at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), the Junior Doctors’ Association of Hassan has demanded proper security for doctors on duty.

At a press conference on Wednesday, representatives of the association sought strict action against those who attacked a few junior doctors on the night of December 31. Y.M. Jeevan, who was among those assaulted, said some people hit him and chased women junior doctors along the hospital corridors. “The incident has disturbed all of us. The police have arrested five of the accused, but all of them have already been released on bail,” he said.

Manjunath, president of the association, said, “We never expected this kind of behaviour from the public. The attackers got bail within hours of the arrest. This conveys a wrong message that such attackers can get away easily. We want strict laws so that such attacks are avoided in future.”

The doctors said three senior doctors were on duty that night but they were working in different wards. “A senior doctor had just gone out of the emergency section when the mob entered and attacked the junior doctors,” said Dr. Jeevan.
