Education (Amendment) Bill referred to select committee

Coming under pressure from the Opposition parties, the government on Tuesday referred the Karnataka Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017, which was earlier passed in the Legislative Assembly, to a select committee of the Legislative Council.

Members of the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) opposed some provisions of the Bill and even staged a dharna to pressurise the government to withdraw the Bill. They argued that the new bill would create panic among teachers, who were responsible for conducting examination.

Intervening in the debate, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asserted that the Bill was tabled with an intention of upholding the sanctity of education and examination system.
