Dandavathi project being opposed for political reasons: Yeddyurappa

B.S. Yeddyurappa, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party State unit, has said that the implementation of the Dandavathi irrigation project was necessary for comprehensive development of Sorab taluk.

A.L. Aravind and Gurupasanna Gowda took charge as president and secretary of the BJP Sorab taluk unit respectively at a programme held in Sorab town on Thursday.

Addressing the programme, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the Dandavathi project was opposed for political reasons.

He said that major parts of the district are in the grips of drought for the second consecutive year.

The then BJP government in the State had planned to implement Dandavathi project to provide water for drinking and agricultural purpose for Jade and Anavatti hoblis that are perennially drought-affected.

It is unfortunate that, the project was opposed for political reasons, he said.

Mr. Yeddyurappa condemned the incident of police personnel caning the activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who were staging a protest in Bengaluru demanding the arrest of persons who had allegedly raised slogans against Indian Army at a programme organised by Amnesty International India at United Theological College there.

Owing to the pressure exerted by the Central leadership of Congress party, the State government has not yet arrested those who had raised slogans against the Army, he alleged.
