Various organisations on Wednesday exhorted people in Karnataka to actively participate in the ongoing agitation against the release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu, even as they extended support to the October 6 Karnataka bandh.
Speaking to presspersons in Bangalore, Rashtriya Kisan Sangha Karnataka committee president P. Rama Reddy said the Cauvery River Authority’s directive to release 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day was a great blunder.
He said it was not that the Prime Minister or the Supreme Court were unaware of the drought situation in Karnataka. They should have exercised restraint before passing the order. He said the sangha had decided to file a public interest litigation petition before the Supreme Court seeking separate allocation of Cauvery water for the drinking water needs of Bangalore. The Karnataka Kaigarika Mattu Vanijyodyama Kannada Sanghagala Okkoota has also extended its support to the bandh and asked the people to participate in the struggle. Okkoota president K. Prabhakara Reddy told presspersons that at a time when the dams in the Cauvery basin were not full and the monsoon had ended, it was impossible to release water to Tamil Nadu.
