Bandaya writer Jambanna Amarachintha no more

Senior Kannada writer identified with the ‘Bandaya’ (rebel) stream, Jambanna Amarachintha, passed away at a private hospital in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Belonging to a backward community and an important writer of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, 72-year-old Jambanna identified himself with the Bandaya literary movement along with Chennanna Walikar, Basavaraj Sabarad and others here, raising his voice against untouchability and feudal oppression.

He effectively used gazal format to compose poems in Kannada. His collections of poetry include

Munjavina Koralu ,

Adho Jagattina Akavya and others. His novel ‘Kurumayya Mattu Ankushadoddi’ (1997) throws light on the life of Korava community and Bootugalina Saddu gives insights on atrocities unleashed by Razakars, a private militia organised in support of Nizam of Hyderabad, who ruled north-eastern part of Karnataka before Independence. He won many awards, including the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award and Karnataka Sahithya Academy Award.
