The Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Karnatak University, Dharwad, for the promotion, production and sale of generic drugs.
Speaking at a programme organised at the university here on Tuesday, BPPI Chief Executive Officer Shri Kumar said that the centre had embarked upon a new project of setting up Jan Aushadi stores under the flagship programme Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadi Yojana.
As the high prices of essential drugs in India were depriving the common man of quality medicines at affordable prices, the Centre had decided to open Jan Aushadi stores in every State. The generic drug house could be established either in district and taluk hospital or even in private places. This year, the Centre planned to open 3,000 Jan Aushadi stores across India of which 250 would be in Karnataka, he added.

Mr. Kumar said that any entrepreneur or non-governmental organisation was eligible to open the Jan Aushadi stores and the government was providing a financial assistance up to Rs 2.5 lakh for the purpose. The person who intends to set up this generic drug house need not posses a B. Pharm. or M. Pharm. , but should employ a person having a pharma degree to run the business.
Physiatrist Anand Pandurangi said that quality monitoring by a government or non-governmental agency was required to run the generic store.
