700 dogs killed in three days

At least 700 stray dogs were killed and buried on the outskirts of Mandya in the past three days, animal rights activists have alleged.

The Mandya City Municipal Council hired a group of people to catch 2,500 stray dogs. However, they have been killing dogs, animal activists alleged.

Meanwhile, municipal officials, including Commissioner M. Dase Gowda, refused to provide information about the dog catcher.

“They are using iron strings to catch dogs. They don’t even have nets and other equipment to catch animals,” Rame Gowda of Subhash Nagar said.

“Even Mandya MP Ramya’s mother Ranjitha objected when they tried to catch dogs using iron strings,” he said.

“Those people inject poison to stray dogs and kill them inside a mini goods carrier. They buried around 700 dogs on a vacant land belonging to the municipal council at Kalenahalli,” Nagaraj, a senior advocate, alleged.

An earthmover was hired to bury the dogs, he said.

An animal rights activist said that he is contemplating filing a criminal case against the municipal authorities in the High Court of Karnataka.
